As Halloween approaches, the people of Philadelphia are dusting off their witch hats and jack-o-lanterns and hitting the town for some festive entertainment. Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the country which has helped it become a prime location for daring ghost hunters and thrill-seekers to explore. If you’re looking to do something outside the realm of trick-or-treating, check out the best Halloween attractions in Philadelphia this year.

Eastern State Penitentiary

The Eastern State Penitentiary was once an 11-acre prison housing criminals like William “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone. The founders had Quaker-inspired beliefs that solitary confinement along with labor could conform criminals.

A tour through the Eastern State Penitentiary takes you through historic cellblocks including Al Capone’s restored nineteenth-century cell. You will also be regaled with exciting stories of inmate escapes.

The Terror Behind the Walls tour was introduced in 2013 and gives visitors the option to be fully immersed in the action to be grabbed, held back, or taken into hidden passageways.

One attention-grabbing attraction is the Machine Shop, where visitors are led deep into cellblocks that haven’t been previously open to the public for an ultra-terrifying experience.

Terror Behind the Walls features special effects, lighting, digital sound, animatronic creatures, and custom props. There are over 200 performers in six separate attractions within the complex.

Pennhurst Asylum

Pennhurst Asylum is a hospital-themed attraction located at the original Pennhurst State School and Hospital located on the upper floors of the old administration building that dates back over a hundred years. It houses many props, high-tech animatronics, digital sound, and live actors.

The Pennhurst State School opened in 1908 and was operated for 60 years until allegations of mistreatment surfaced. As allegations were proven true, the school was abandoned. As legend goes, one of the brain surgeons, Dr. Chakajian, began performing experiments on corpses of people who had given their bodies to science. Eventually, these experiments expanded to include live inmates from Eastern European prisons. These experiments included unproven drugs, new medical procedures, and even open brain surgery techniques. One night a fire broke out and inmates took over the asylum. Dr. Chakajian was killed and some of the inmates were left to die. It is said that their ghosts, as well as those of Dr. Chakajian and his staff, haunt the deserted asylum to this day.

The Dungeon of Lost Souls is a labyrinth of “human experiments that have gone horribly wrong,” and the Tunnel Terror is a 900-foot-long gauntlet beneath the grounds of the old State School. The final attraction, called Ghost Hunt, is a self-guided tour of the most haunted location on campus where tours are conducted only by flashlight.

Ghost Tour of the Olympia

The USS Olympia, located on the Delaware River at Penn’s Landing, was first commissioned in 1895 and was said to be haunted ever since. Ghost hunters have been drawn to the Olympia for over 100 years, including the Syfy Channel’s Ghost Hunters and the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures.

Within the ship, you’ll find a labyrinthine interior full of disappearing apparitions, ghostly voices, and unexplained paranormal activity. On the Ghost Tour, you’ll be led through three eerie decks that include the captain’s cabins, galley, sick bay, and the area notorious for the ship’s most famous ghost, “Gunner” Johnson.

So this Halloween, don’t be afraid to experience all the spooky adventures that Philadelphia has to offer.

In Philadelphia, as the summer heat makes way for cooler temperatures, many fall festivals and events are just around the corner. Whether you’re interested in something spooky around Halloween or the city’s art scene, there are many exciting opportunities and festivals to explore. Philadelphia has a lot to offer in every season and the fall is no exception. Check out what’s going on in Philly in fall 2015 and prepare to mark up your calendar!

Midtown Village Fall Festival

The Midtown Village Fall Festival takes place on Saturday, October 3, from 12-8 p.m. on 13th Street from Chestnut to Locust Streets. Seven blocks are closed down while thousands fill the streets to enjoy food, drinks, live entertainment, shopping, and much more. You won’t go hungry with food samplings from popular Midtown Village restaurants like Barbuzzo, Jamonera, Zavino, Pennsylvania 6, and Sampan, to name a few. Live music will be played on four different stages featuring students from the University of the Arts and many other performers. If you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, check out the Sumo suit wrestling at Raw throughout the day. There is fun for the whole family with many kid-friendly activities such as a moon bounce, sand castle building, and face painting. Since the streets will be bustling, you might want to look into staying overnight at one of the great hotels Philly has to offer.

DesignPhiladelphia

DesignPhiladelphia is Philly’s city-wide celebration of design and innovation taking place on October 8-16. During the nine day festival, there are more than 130 events held throughout the city aimed to celebrate and promote Philadelphia as a design capital. Some of the events include exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and demonstrations focused on the city’s design scene and history. Most events are free.

Bloktoberfest

On October 3, at 12 p.m., Philly’s South Street West will host bands and endless craft beer options to benefit various charitable causes. Bringing in people of all ages, the festival spans four blocks with plenty of food, beer, and live music. Enjoy dishes from food trucks and samples from South Street restaurants. You must purchase a Beer Bracelet to enter the designated drinking area if you’re over 21. The festival is free to enter and pay-as-you-go for drinks and food.

Terror Behind the Walls

If you’re looking to get into the Halloween spirit, pay a visit to the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia’s Fairmount neighborhood for Terror Behind the Walls. The event runs from September 18-November 7, so you have plenty of time to check out the Hollywood-quality special effects, lighting, digital sound, and animatronic monsters. This year, there are more frightening attractions than ever, as guests can be fully immersed in the action if they choose, even being taken into hidden passageways and held back to become part of the scares. It won’t take long to see why Terror Behind the Walls is consistently ranked among the top haunted attractions in America.

With all there is going on in Philadelphia this fall, there’s no reason to be sad about summer ending.

Walking and hiking are excellent forms of exercise. They get your blood pumping, increase your heart rate, and allow you to take in the spectacular views of the Delaware Valley and surrounding areas.

Exercise is important for staying healthy, and walking and hiking can be so much fun that you forget you’re actually working out. And with the summer months approaching, you may be looking to get outside for some adventure in the sun.

Check out some of the best walking and hiking trails in the area for a few ideas on where  you can go.

Wissahickon Valley Park

Forbidden Drive runs from the merging point of Monoshone and Wissahickon Creeks all the way to the Philadelphia city limits, adjacent to Wissahickon Creek. The path is a mostly flat crushed-stone surface, so it’s perfect for all ages. There are many trees that provide shade on hot, sunny days, and the creek provides a scenic view as you walk.

The trails wind up the ridge for added difficulty for those looking to take their workout up a notch. Hikers can also learn a lot during their hike, as there are nearly two dozen historical, geological, and anthropological sites throughout the trails.

Anson B. Nixon Park

Anson B. Nixon Park is located on North Walnut Street, just off State Street, north of downtown Kennett Square. With over 106 acres, the park includes two ponds, streams, woodlands, and 3 miles of walking trails. It’s open from dawn to dusk daily.

If you’re interested in activities other than walking and hiking, this park offers disc golf tournaments, dance performances, and a summer concert series.

White Clay Creek State Park

Located in Newark, DE, this lush park is filled with greenery as well as sparkling streams for scenic views as you hike across the 37 miles of trails. These trails lead to historic sites and scenic vistas that overlook valleys and rock outcrops.

When you’re done with your hike, relax at the large picnic pavilion or enjoy some of the outdoor activities that are always taking place at the park.

Appalachian National Scenic Trail – Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail extends along the Appalachian Mountains, and of its 2,174 miles, 28 miles are located within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. These trails provide hours or days of hiking as well as majestic views and wildlife sightings.

Biking is prohibited on the trails, and animals must be on a 6-foot-long leash. It’s also recommended that hikers carry water, as the water along the trails may not be suitable for drinking.

These parks are located nearby and are perfect for enjoying nature while also working up a sweat. It’s important to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day to keep your joints and muscles healthy as well as for your cardiovascular health.
